Smart Buildings Are the Key to an Improvised Life and Enhanced Quality of Living

From Stone Age, man has been trying to find shelter in the shades of trees and the womb of mountains. The search for a proper home diminished at the end of stone age, as homes with residential atmosphere had been started building around that time, but the quest of smart home is still ongoing. But with the architectural revolution, that quest seems to be on the verge of completing. The technologies, devices and designs has made it easier to find smart solutions for a proper residential home.

As Jim Sinopoli, the founder of Smart Buildings quotes, “Building owners now have to make use of technology that was not available five years ago. And that is going to modify the way we look at buildings. However, the question here will be how the architects and design engineers respond. It would be disruptive to make buildings smart but it is something that is inevitable.”

Based on the recent advancements in science and technology, green and intelligent homes just need the right supervision to be constructed with maximum efficiency and excellent performance.

China houses the pride of being a country which has its own Smart Homes and Intelligent Building Expo. Looks like we are on the way to do that too. The amount of technology being incorporated in almost every aspect of our environment and surroundings is astonishing. It has occupied every sector like automobiles, gadgets, home interiors and what not. So, what is the harm in expecting an automated and intuitive building in the terms of its construction and operation? And if there is no harm, then Sinopoli is correct in saying, “Information Technology is quickly being incorporated in almost every aspect of the construction of a smart building.”

Smart buildings are one word for those residentials which are smarter, greener and cheaper, thus satisfying all the residential needs of an individual. But, what should be noted is the architectural advancement and technology used should also focus on other aspects like ventilated houses, security etc. The cheap rates should not bring down the quality of construction and the greenery should not cover up all the free space. A better building at cheap rates is the main aim.

Just a case, where an earthquake strikes the town, a smart building will close gas connections, turn down power meter and alert the residents. The corporate headquarters of Deloitte, The Edge, in Amsterdam is the perfect example of what a smart building is. It has incorporated 28,000 sensors which micromanages light, temperature and humidity to create a pleasant environment for employees who feel as if they are outside enjoying the nature.

Neuroscience has also crept its way in the commotion. The people are being analysed for their reactions to certain environmental conditions with the aim of using the results for designing smart houses. It has been proved in studies, that human mind stimulates on having a visual access to the vastness of sky and natural light with its lustre along with streams and landscapes. The mind generates positive vibrations when exposed to such environment. That is one of the reasons that smart buildings tend to incline towards greenery.

Even the insignificant things like wall colours, acoustics which do not seem to be noticed by naked mind, is actually noticed by sub conscious mind. The sub conscious registers its surrounds and that is why these things too have a great deal of impact on quality living and enhanced lifestyle. Smart buildings should actually serve their purpose, like hospitals should feel like luxury hotels where one could find relaxation instead of retardation, schools should feel like a place to enjoy instead of jails and offices should feel like a place to generate innovation, with a free mind and relaxed soul. This is the true meaning of smart buildings.

The recent advancements in technology are mind blowing. One such example is, with the use of IOT that is Internet of Things, a number of PIR sensors, can calculate the number of people in the room and turn the lights ON and OFF according to it. What can be a more perfect way to save energy consumption and unnecessary wastage? IoT is of great use in building sector as with the help of sensor generated inputs, it can make the functioning of a smart building improvised and enhanced.

A recent study has shown that building materials can assist a great deal in the construction of smart housing. For example, the concept of smart concrete has been put up by scientists in which, the concrete which generally crumbles under high pressure of water, will sustain with the help of dormant bacteria spores and calcium lactate in self contained pores, the concept being that, when the water will come in contact with these pods, they will form limestone and fill up the gaps in the concrete, reinforcing it against water. A perfect cost cutting measure. Another instance of smart material houses a shape shifting metal. It is a type of metal which changes its shape under pressure, for example at times of earthquake and hurricanes, but is designed to remember and retains its original shape after the pressure lowers down. It can mainly be used in constructing buildings and bridges to withstand the tortures of natural calamities. Astonishing! Isn’t it?

Nano materials which have lost their glamour will also find a great deal of fame in the upcoming advancements. They will soon be recognized for their super-strong and super-light nature, resulting in thinner and more transparent facades. The Nano composite steel is far stronger than conventional steel. The conventional steel starts to lose its structural integrity above 750 F, and at 1000 F, steel loses half of its strength. When steel is infused with Nano particles, it can maintain its structural integrity up to 1000 F. Fatigue can lead to structure failure in steel subjected to cyclic loading, in towers and buildings. Stress risers lead to cracks which leads to fatigue. When copper nano particles are added, they not only reduce the surface evenness of steel, but also give it ultra-high strength, makes it corrosion resistant and provides it a good surface finish.

The concept of smart buildings is off to a slow start, but the interior and exterior designers are assured with the increasing demands of proper living conditions and enhanced quality life at a cheaper and affordable rate, that these technologies will make their way into the construction industry real soon and make the residences, an opportunity for a progressed and efficient living. And once they are incorporated in the industry, that day will also come when India will organize its own Smart Homes and Intelligent Building Expo, giving a stiff competition to China. In Out Green Interiors are incorporated on these lines and are providing energy sustainable and green solutions to the residential and corporate. Delhi Housing Scheme, the mighty saviour of many who needs home at affordable rates, is a blessing in true sense as it is stationed with the aim of providing housing to all, at cheap affordable rates and it is completing its responsibility by providing quality living at a range of rates
